About Somerset West squirrel

Somerset West is approximately 40minutes east of Cape Town city centre traveling along the N2 national road, 20 minutes past the Cape Town International Airport, and is the start of the famous Cape wine route. It is also just 10 minutes drive to the beaches of the Strand and 15 minutes to the University town of Stellenbosch which itself is steeped in history and of course is the main centre of the wine industry. Surrounded by mountains, being at the base of the Helderberg mountain, affords beautiful views from every aspect of Somerset West whether you be up on the hillside looking out to the False Bay and Cape Point or down in the valley looking up to the mountains. Somerset West boasts a population of approximately 33 000 people of diverse culture and is known for its fairly large German community. It is also a very popular destination for “Swallows”, overseas visitors who visit annually for extended periods attracted by its location in relation to other centres and the many facilities offered.

Sporting facilities include a choice of top class golf courses, one being Erinvale Golf Estate, the home of the 1996 World Cup of Golf, tennis, bowls, hockey, cricket, rugby, soccer, croquet and running clubs, along with the flying club that has a small airfield. There are two world class hotels, the Lord Charles and the Erinvale Estate Hotel and a vast selection of top class restaurants appealing to all tastes, plus numerous guest houses offering good accommodation. The medical facilities in Somerset West are renowned for their excellence with two hospitals, one being the private Medi-clinic with its own cardiac and oncology units plus specialists in all medical fields. To top it all Somerset West has a large, very comprehensive shopping mall, the Somerset Mall, catering to all tastes and needs which also houses the cinema complex and many restaurants.

Somerset West enjoys a temperate climate with fairly mild winters which though it is the rainy season also enjoys many warm and sunny days. Summer, November through to April, enjoys hot, sunny days but the sea breeze generally helps to keep the temperature at a  comfortable level, and May through June experiences crisp mornings, sunny days and balmy evenings.
